Cleansing: Keeping Blackheath Clean

With the Greening Competition underway, we cannot expect you to be the only ones contributing. As you know we have an amazing team that works tirelessly to ensure that the Blackheath area is as clean and tidy as possible. All areas of Blackheath are cleaned of trash regularly, but it is important that we all remain vigilant to stop people from ‘messing up’ our surrounding environment. Please encourage all staff and others to use the dustbins and garbage depots provided, as social responsibility starts with us.

There are always challenges we must face which are not necessarily our fault, but we can work to find a solution. Recently a container was dumped in Wimbledon Road, and while the container has been removed, the contents are still lying-in-wait. We have been informed that this will be addressed with all due haste.

Another unfortunate incident was that of dumping on the corner of Range Road and Nicole Street. The BCID team was on site that day to clean it up and as usual thank them for their hard work and diligence. The task took about an hour to clean up, one which could have been spent elsewhere in need of some TLC. So we request that all members keep a weathered eye out for any suspicious dumping activity and also ensure that all waste is disposed of in the correct manner. Illegal dumping in progress may be reported to 0860 765 423 or to ST3 Security on 021 905 3399. To report an illegal dump site call 0860 103 098. Continue reading

Blackheath Development: We are still Growing

Goosebumps, most of you may know them as the little bumps you get when a chill runs up your spine, but in this case Goosebumps is the provider of quality frozen goods, from bread rolls to colourful confectionaries. Having recently acquired ownership of the old Verno property at 33 Range Road, they have taken their landownership responsibilities to a new level and are upgrading the site quite considerably.

The upgrades so far have taken about a year to complete, with many more in the pipeline.  And with plenty of space still on site, one can be sure they have big plans.  Much has already been accomplished; from moving the reception closer to the entrance for easy accessibility, to providing the factory shop entrance with a green face-lift.  We had the good fortune of meeting with Mr Myburgh, the operations director, who humbly stated that they were just playing their role as responsible members of the CID.

Home-Away-From-Home: Keep it Clean!

Greening Competition

While ST3 and the law enforcement are working to keep us safe, we can work to keep our area looking the best it can be to make it a pleasure to work in.

As some may know the Blackheath Greening Competition got underway on 1 February 2013 when entries opened; so this is the perfect opportunity to put that green thumb your wife or husband said you never had to the test. We encourage all to enter and participate in this project as it is a chance to improve the environment of the surrounding area and win a prize of R1000 to a local restaurant. The closing date for entries will be 31 March 2013, so now is the time to get cracking.

We look forward to seeing what you can all do to make our ‘home away from home’ a little greener.

Entries can be sent to jean@bcid.co.za should you be interested in taking part. Just let me know!

Project news – February 2013

Happy Valley Housing Project: Making People Happy

The Happy Valley Hosing Project is in the final stretch. With a few more months to go we have already seen amazing progress being made. ASLA Construction hopes to be finished with the housing project by end of July this year.

To date they have handed over 396 houses to people from the Happy Valley Informal Settlement and continue to hand over houses at a rate of 50 per week. A wonderful achievement!

But there are always delays and unfortunately power outages in Wimbledon Road have set them back a few weeks. They will be returning after July to resolve this issue and finish off their projects in the area. We will continue to support them and thank them for all the good work they have put into the project thus far.

Security News – February 2013

As the first half of the year progresses it is important to remain aware and vigilant. Whilst crime may have been less than expected in the festive season, February has shown an increase in cable theft and burglaries on business premises. SAPS and ST3 Security work around the clock to ensure that all criminal activity is apprehended, but we can assist them by reporting any suspicious or criminal activity. A lot of crime goes unreported and this is detrimental to the allocation of law enforcement resources to the area. If you wish to see increased safety then please report any criminal activity or break-ins at your premises to the SAPS at the Blue Downs Police Station.

Blackheath CID Greening Competition for 2013

Last year we awarded the winners of the Blackheath CID Greening Competition with their prizes of R1000 meal vouchers to the Skilpadvlei Wine Farm Restaurant.  As promised last year the competition begins anew in February when we will choose another 3 winners for the first half of 2013.

Remember also that I am very happy to assist you to develop your green spaces and have our team of staff that can assist with this also!  We look forward to hearing from you.  We still have Palm Trees, Yucca’s and some other trees and shrubs available to donate to your cause.  They can be viewed at the BCID Office at our little nursery.

We have begun a process for the reinstatement of the verge at the roundabout at the corner of Wimbledon and Buttskop Roads.  The original garden that we developed three years ago suffered damage during the welcome and most necessary road works that were carried out as part of the neighbouring housing developments.  This project will be taken up in partnership with the City Parks division of the City of Cape Town and various other role players.

We are awaiting installation of water mains, funding for irrigation and vegetation and then we shall complete this project.  I decided that considering the challenges we had relating to irrigation and maintenance at this location, it would be best to delay the project slightly and go for the option with irrigation to ensure the garden remains well kept and achieves the desired result of beautification!

Further Local Development in Blackheath

Other developments are also taking shape in Blackheath, like the Home Choice development in School Road that truly is becoming a landmark as it towers into the Blackheath sky over thousands of square meters under roof as part of the new distribution centre.

The old Helderberg Timbers site in Range Road has been sold and is getting a facelift and a proposed 2000m2 under roof.  This new owner is an outdoor furniture and other items manufacturing concern that has relocated to Blackheath.  I shall keep you updated as this unfolds.  In the meantime though let’s welcome our new neighbour to the area.

Wimbledon Road Development and Infrastructure upgrade

The development along Wimbledon Road that is aligned to the Housing project in Happy Valley is also making good progress.  It is clear that the City of Cape Town has listened to the calls from the Blackheath Industrial community through the various applications made by the Blackheath City Improvement District to address pedestrian safety within the Blackheath Industrial Area.

Long lines of Pedestrian walkways are beginning to become evident along this route as they snake along the newly shaped road that has made provision for bus stops and safer exits to the side streets that service the Blackheath Industrial Area.

We are proud to see progress.
